25/05/10 Great green spaces good for councils and visitors!

CABE – the government’s advisor on architecture, urban design and public space, recently reported that if people are satisfied with their local park, they tend to be satisfied with their council.

CABE’s report Urban green nation: building the evidence base reveals that almost nine out of 10 people now use parks and green spaces, compared to three out of 10 people that visit concert halls and galleries. The historic decline in the quality of green spaces has been reversed. The data suggests residents are now using parks and green spaces more, and they value them more.

Fitzpatrick Woolmer Managing Director, Mark Woolmer, comments “I am not at all surprised by CABE’s findings, especially bearing in mind the quality of visitor experience provided by most of the parks and green spaces we work with. I am constantly impressed by the commitment exhibited by our customers who are passionate about creating the best green spaces – something that has obviously paid dividends in terms of increased resident use. 15 years ago, when I started Fitzpatrick Woolmer, councils seemed to just be waking up to the importance of investing in green spaces, and in products and services such as interpretive signage, creative mapping and waymarking. CABE’s report reaffirms this importance and shows just how far UK green spaces have come over the last decade”. Mark adds “I really hope the new coalition government recognises the importance of these spaces and continues to invest, as it would be a terrible shame to see the quality of our green spaces decline, especially since so much headway has been made.”
