A recent survey by Fitzpatrick Woolmer, providers of creative solutions to enhance public and open spaces, reveals recycled plastic products as a growth market.
One of the few UK sign manufacturers to work with timber, metal and recycled plastic - Fitzpatrick Woolmer are well positioned to become market leaders across all three. With their wood and metal ranges well established, they are keen to develop their recycled plastic range. As part of that development, they asked a cross section of clients some probing questions about the material and its role in sustainable procurement.
The results revealed some interesting insights: almost 90% of those surveyed were managing procurement to some level of sustainable policy or standard, and over 50% admitted recycled plastic played a key role. And, although over 80% considered the market for recycled plastic products a growth area, only 40% currently purchase products made from the material. The most common perception of how recycled plastic might be applied in green spaces was as benches, with only 26% associating recycled plastic with signage. Over 40% of those that haven’t purchased any recycled plastic products conceded if they knew a little more about it, and could be persuaded the quality had improved, they would definitely consider it in-line with any future requirements.
With organisations under increasing pressure to affirm their commitment to the efficient use of natural resources and waste avoidance, attitudes to purchasing products made from recovered materials are changing. With this in mind, Fitzpatrick Woolmer are keen to ensure procurers understand the breadth of products that can be manufactured in recycled plastic, and that recycled plastic products can be purchased far more competitively today, are 100% recyclable, maintenance free, rot free and designed, where required, to blend in naturally with the environment.
Fitzpatrick Woolmer Managing Director, Mark Woolmer comments “Sustainable procurement is of growing importance and it is vital that procurers are well informed about the broad use of recovered materials. Landfill in the UK is a huge issue and one that we all have a responsibility to try and minimise - choosing recycled materials is key to this. The old perceptions of recycled plastic products being of poor quality and standing out like a sore thumb are not relevant to the recycled plastic available today."
Mark adds “It’s great that the general consensus is that recycled plastic products are important to the environment, and I am excited that Fitzpatrick Woolmer is involved in helping to sustain the future.”
