Just 6 kilometers from Trafalgar Square lies Hampstead Heath, one of London’s most popular green open spaces. The heath has a lot of recreational facilities, is home to a wide range of wildlife and hosts extensive sporting events, one of which being swimming. The heath offers three main swimming ponds (men’s, ladies’ and mixed) and an open air Lido. It is the UK’s only lifeguarded open air swimming facility and is open to the public 365 days a year!
Open air swimming at Hampstead Heath is a popular past time for locals and tourists alike. With no restrictions on who can use the swimming facilities the Corporation of London is very mindful of its corporate responsibility to minimise risk to users of the ponds and lakes.
To raise awareness of how and when the lakes and ponds can be used, welcome signs and risk awareness signs have been placed at all entry points, allowing visitors to better understand the character of each pond and the precautions they should take when using them.
With ladies’, men’s and mixed bathing throughout the heath, further facilities signs were provided, helping visitors choose the most appropriate bathing area for their needs and level of ability.
The scheme was developed by Evolve Design as part of a branding and risk assessment exercise that has seen further signage roll out across other Corporation of London sites.
